Makers of Our Name.
Makers of Our Name was written because of a songwriters prompt theme for Brent Kirby's 10x3 at Brothers Lounge in Cleveland, OH (2019). Words were submitted by the audience and members of the music community and then randomly selected with the intention that all 10 songwriters participating in that week's theme would write a song inspired by the words chosen.
The 4 words selected were: Makers, Memories, Neptune, and Tuesday. These words inspired a journey through time for me. I thought about how language transcends time...and the words we say today, for the days of the week for example, were chosen 1000's of years ago to honor the gods as were the names of the planets. The song is a lyrical frolic from a feeling deeply moved by this concept and my present-day participation in creating, making art & expressions crafted with words and language that have been used through countless generations.
The power of language resonates, conjures and connotes so much within each of us in our daily lives and we don't always realize it until we examine the etymology of common words in our daily vocabulary. We are always making memories and we define our experience through our language, whether we speak out loud or not, our inner dialogue is as powerful to our experience as any words we speak.
This all scratches the surface of what this song means to me, I hope you feel it too and go forward inspired to be a little more conscious of the power that lies within what you make, and that you feel the ancestors spirits and intentions in the words you choose to say; and what you make of your name.
